M.E. Society: The Mind and Environment Society

A Movement. A Moment. A Mindset. A Mission.

Welcome to The M.E. Society - thanks for stopping by. Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are just two friends who share one mission - to leave the planet better than we found it, and to encourage others to do the same. We know how fatalistic the climate doom narrative can be, and we are here to rewrite that narrative. It’s not too late to save our environment, but it will require action from everyone, no matter who they are or what they do. We agree that big corporations are largely, if not entirely responsible for anthropogenic climate change, but also recognize that demand drives the market, and the actions of consumers can influence the actions of these big corporations.

We are not about finger-pointing or fear-mongering - we are simply here to embrace our situation for what it is, to do what we can to improve it, and to equip other people to improve it as well.

We understand that conversations about the climate in the 21st century can be scary - depressing, even. We want to embrace reality with optimism, and to explore the connections between mental health and the environment. Spending time in nature is proven to positively influence mental (and physical) health - so let’s weave it into our modern society and get back to our roots (literally).

Our modern society in the Western World has never been more disconnected from nature. For tens of thousands of years, humans lived intimately with the natural world, sculpting their lives to be interwoven from it. Sadly, over the past few hundred years, we have built our societies on top of it instead. We are here to reinvigorate that connection with nature that we so desperately need - to help save it, and to help save ourselves.

The concept behind M.E. Society was first developed in 2022, when founders Kayla and Melissa took a Sustainability Leadership class together through Johns Hopkins University. The graduate-level field course took place in Moose River, Maine, and brought two strangers together as roommates and, almost immediately, close friends. Kayla’s idea for a project for this class blossomed into what our organization is today, thanks to her planting that initial seed.

Two strangers becoming best friends and even business partners - chalk it up to coincidence or fate if you will, but our main takeaways are the magic of the unknown, and the power that one person holds to change the world, even if that starts with just one individual. We want to inspire other people to take action into their own hands, and be the best versions of themselves to protect and preserve our planet.

We’re just getting started and can’t wait to share everything we’ve been working on. Be sure to follow us on social media (links in the footer) and reach out if you’d like to get involved too. Remember to go through life with kindness and empathy - for yourself, for the planet, and for those you share it with.
